British chip design giant ARM has announced its latest chips for the smartphone market, the Cortex-R5 MPCore and Cortex-R7 MPCore, adding in support for LTE and LTE-Advanced platforms.
Further shoring up its defences against Intel’s assault on the smartphone market with its promised low-power Atom variants, ARM’s newest Cortex-R chips offer binary compatibility with the company’s existing processors while adding in new features and technologies that the company hopes will keep in on top.
Designed for both smartphone and embedded use, the Cortex-R5 and Cortex-R7 chips are available in single- or dual-core designs, although ARM recommends that the Cortex-R7 - which includes improved symmetric multiprocessing features over its cheaper brother - is used for dual-core implementations.
