Multicore will eventually be commonplace for many categories of devices, delivering more processing power and lower energy consumption, while virtualization will provide partitioning capabilities on top of single and multicore processors. Mobile devices are already being tasked with handling graphics, videos, applications, and more. These demands will only continue to expand. Multicore and virtualization combined provide many new and exciting opportunities for developers to increase devices’ feature densities and handle these demands.
Flexibility will be a key requirement as the market moves to four, eight, and more cores. While virtualization is not necessarily a must-have now, it’s important to plan for and provide flexibility down the road. Having a single OS strategy might work for what you have going on in your architecture now, but you really should prepare for the future, especially considering the rate at which devices are developing.
