Expect More From Multicore

Why have software developers been slow off the mark when developing applications that utilise processors with more than one core?

What’s happened to the multicore revolution? When the first dual-core processors rolled out back in April 2005, it was meant to be just the first step on the path to a massively multicore future. Very soon our PCs would be humming to the sound of scores of cores, enabling as-yet unimagined and life-altering applications. Sure enough, less than 18 months later the first quad-core desktop CPU appeared, and the industry’s predictions seemed to be coming true. And then nothing. It’s now mid-2009 and four cores is still as good as it gets.
