Why have software developers been slow off the mark when developing applications that utilise processors with more than one core?
What’s happened to the multicore revolution? When the first dual-core processors rolled out back in April 2005, it was meant to be just the first step on the path to a massively multicore future. Very soon our PCs would be humming to the sound of scores of cores, enabling as-yet unimagined and life-altering applications. Sure enough, less than 18 months later the first quad-core desktop CPU appeared, and the industry’s predictions seemed to be coming true. And then nothing. It’s now mid-2009 and four cores is still as good as it gets.
