NEC Electronics, Renesas target next April for merger

Japan’s NEC Electronics and Renesas Technology said they were in talks to merge next year to create the world’s third-biggest chipmaker after Intel Corp and Samsung Electronics.

It would be the latest shakeup in the battered semiconductor industry, in which makers are increasingly joining hands to ride out a prolonged downturn caused by oversupply, sharp price falls and sluggish chip demand.
