Nvidia Shows Android Device, 1080p Smartphone Chip

Chipset makers Nvidia kicked out three stunning new demos at Mobile World Congress on Tuesday: an Android concept device, a Windows Mobile device running two videos and 1080p HD output all at once, and a $99 mobile Internet device, all based on the manufacturer’s Tegra platform.

The Android and HD demos used Nvidia’s APX 2600 chipset, which was just announced at this show. The APX 2600 uses a multi-core ARM11 processor running at 600-800 MHz with separate GPU and audio.video blocks, and 12-megapixel camera support. According to Nvidia’s spec sheet, the chipset supports 720p output, but Nvidia spokeswoman Bea Longworth said its demo was an “enhanced” unit capable of 1080p HD.
