Tech companies drop in at campuses to help scale up skill sets

Getting the right people for the job has always been a challenge. But now, companies see it not only as a challenge, but a big concern that they themselves need to address.

Not surprisingly, India Inc. is reaching out to university campuses to improve the quality of teachers and teaching. To meet this goal, many companies that have had associations with colleges now plan to take their academic initiatives to a new level.

They are not just reaching out to students, but taking the issue head-on — seeking quality teachers and replacing the outdated curriculum in colleges by bringing together stakeholders under one roof — students, teachers and the companies.

IBM’s three recently-launched programmes, The Project Invite, The Great Mind Challenge (TGMC) and the Drona Partner Programme aim to achieve exactly the same. The first edition of TGMC, a software programming contest, which was kicked off last year, saw participation of over 60,000 students across 24 states and for this year, 45,600 students from 1,435 colleges have already been registered.
